Rio de Janeiros Christ Redeemer Statue to host wedding ceremonies

Couples from all over the world will travel to Rio de Janeiro to tie knot as the Brazilian Catholic Church has announced Rio’s famous Christ statue will host wedding ceremonies.

The Christ statue sits on Corcovado mountain, 700m over Rio de Janeiro. This year, Rio’s Christ, the most distinctive symbols of the city, celebrates its 75th anniversary.

The Brazilian Catholic church is hoping to get a more religious feeling to the place and make it into a pilgrimage destination to compensate for the thousands of tourist it gets every year. The Nossa Senhora Aparecida chapel, underneath the statue, will be consecrated for the purpose and wedding ceremonies will start from January 2007.

Foreign Catholics wishing to marry at the Christ statue must first go through pre-wedding formalities with their local church and then send the documentation on to Rio de Janeiro.
