Irish couples to marry wherever they want, but not outdoors

Irish couples will be able to marry in any venue of their choice by the end of the coming summer but not outdoors, according to the Irish Independent.

Currently, Irish couples form the Republic can marry legally only in a church or a registry office. Officials from the General Register Office are hoping to have the new legislation in place by June or July 2007.

When the new law comes into effect, Irish couples will be able to marry in any building of their choice, like a private house or a hotel. However, the new law is not including outdoor venues and marquees.

Tom Doyle, higher executive officer with the registry office, said to the Irish paper that there will be a list of appropriate buildings but couples will also be able to apply to have another building listed if that is where they want to get married.
