Humanist weddings are quickly winning popularity among British couples, according to the Humanist Society.

Figures from the Humanist Society show 434 British couples chose a humanist ceremony last year, compared to just 80 in 2004.

A bride from Co. Clare and her Dutch fiancée married in Scotland in June 2005 and were the first couple to tie the knot in a legally recognized humanist ceremony in Britain.

Previously, a marriage ceremony was only legally binding if carried out by a minister of religion or a registrar.
