Barcelona has opened Europe's, and perhaps the world's, first bridal boutique for gay couples, according to Mexican proprietor Santiago Porrero.

The opening of the boutique, called By, on 30th May, coincided with Barcelona Bridal Week. The premises are located in the city's gay quarter, nicknamed Gaycelona, and will provide an alternative range of wedding gear for same-sex couples.

Porrero said he chose Catalunya's capital city because it's an 'open-minded and modern city, very linked to design and an important tourist destination for gays'. Porrero said he hopes some gay couples from Britain and other European countries may travel to Barcelona to choose their wedding outfits.
The shop mixes classic tailoring and ready to wear items. Rings, accessories and gifts for gay couples are also be available at the shop, stocked by a collection of mainly Spanish designers.

Same-gender marriage was approved by the Spanish Socialist government in 2005. Porrero, a Mexican who graduated from the prestigious Esade business school in Barcelona, said he decided to launch the business after the law was approved.
