My bf and I have decided that we want to get hitched in Ireland. We are both American citizens. We want it to be small and non-denominational. So I have been doing my research and haven't gotten to the planning part yet. There seems to be a lot of legal steps to take. We just want to have a ceremony abroad and do the legal thing in the States. The rule/law seems to be giving notice, being in Ireland for a certain amount of time and indoor wedding vs. outdoor?? If we are not planning on having it legal in Ireland, do we have to jump through those hoops? We can't afford to make multiple trips to Ireland. Just one big one. Your advice would really be appreciated!

I think if you are a US citizen and are planning the legal marriage here in the US, you should be fine just having a symbolic wedidng in Ireland. Here is a web site you can read, and altohugh it doesn't specifically list symbolic weddings, there are phone numbers at the bottom of the link. You can call these numbers and they should be able to provide you wih the relevant information: (call the General Reg. Office-number at the bottom)
